About the Opportunity

The Law Society is currently seeking a full-time Director of Policy & Strategic Initiatives to join our team in a hybrid work environment, in Vancouver, B.C.

In this key leadership role, you will report to the Chief Operating Officer and oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic initiatives and policy frameworks that support informed decision-making at the highest levels of the organization. You will serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director/CEO, Benchers, Committees, Task Forces, and internal stakeholders, while leading the Policy & Planning team and managing departmental resources. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and coordinating the Law Society’s strategic planning processes and translating goals into measurable action plans
  • Overseeing policy development across complex portfolios and ensuring proposals advance organizational priorities
  • Implementing, monitoring, and evaluating policy decisions and projects to keep initiatives on track
  • Identifying risks, issues, and improvement opportunities and recommending innovative solutions
  • Preparing and presenting analysis, reports, and recommendations to Benchers, Committees, Task Forces, and external stakeholders
  • Overseeing the development of work plans, meeting materials, agendas, and minutes for governance bodies
  • Managing the Policy & Planning departmental budget and ensuring effective resource allocation
  • Hiring, supervising, supporting, and developing Policy & Planning staff, including lawyers, analysts, and administrative roles
  • Providing leadership, coaching, and direction to foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment
  • Advising on policy, strategy, and innovation matters and supporting the COO with emerging initiatives
  • Coordinating cross-departmental collaboration to ensure consistent, informed, and timely policy processes
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with board members, senior staff, and external partners to support strategic priorities

About You

To qualify, you will need a bachelor’s or master's degree in a relevant field such as law, political science, public policy, or public administration, and significant experience supporting organizational leadership in policy or strategic advisory work. A minimum of 10 years of recent experience in the regulatory, government, public sector, or non-profit environment will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Knowledge of Law Society rules, professional ethics, and professional competence models
  • Experience navigating governance structures and supporting board or committee processes
  • Familiarity with the regulation of professionals or government relations
  • Experience working with lawyers or legal teams
  • Previous experience managing budgets and supervising professional staff
  • Recent experience in legal research, public policy development, legislation/regulation development, or regulatory activities
  • Eligibility for membership in the Law Society of BC
