About the Opportunity
The Law Society is currently seeking a full-time Director of Investigations, Monitoring & Enforcement to join our team in a hybrid work environment, in Vancouver, B.C.
Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, this role oversees the Investigations, Monitoring & Enforcement (IME) Group and provides strategic leadership to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of regulatory processes. The Director plays a critical role in leading investigations, monitoring compliance, and advancing anti-money laundering initiatives while managing a team of approximately 23 staff.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading, hiring, training, and supporting the IME Group staff
- Ensuring consistent application of fair, effective, and timely regulatory processes for investigations
- Overseeing compliance with hearing panel orders and voluntary undertakings
- Developing and implementing policy improvements in collaboration with the Policy group
- Monitoring trends impacting regulatory matters and contributing to strategic initiatives
- Reviewing and approving legal opinions and reports prepared for the Discipline Committee
- Maintaining relationships with external agencies to enhance the Law Society's regulatory work
- Managing the IME Group’s operational and external counsel budgets
- Planning and coordinating special projects, presentations, and speaking engagements
- Responding to communications from lawyers, complainants, and the public related to investigations
- Acting as Chief Legal Officer during absences and providing mentorship across the Professional Regulation Department
About You
To qualify, you will need practising membership in the Law Society of BC or eligibility for membership, and a minimum of 10 years of recent practice and investigations experience coupled with significant leadership experience.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Knowledge of anti-money laundering risks to the legal profession
- Conducting investigations in a trauma-informed way
- Extensive knowledge of the Legal Profession Act, Law Society Rules, and the Code of Professional Conduct of BC
- Superior judgment and analytical skills
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication abilities
