About the Opportunity
The Law Society is currently seeking a full-time Director of Discipline to join our team in a hybrid work environment, in Vancouver, B.C.
Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, the Director of Discipline is responsible for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Discipline group, ensuring compliance with the Legal Profession Act and Law Society Rules. This role includes leading a team, overseeing disciplinary processes, and providing strategic advice and recommendations to leadership and committees.
Key responsibilities include:
- Hiring, training, managing, and supervising Discipline staff
- Preparing and managing the budget for the Discipline group
- Developing and managing discipline processes, policies, and procedures
- Providing leadership and direction to the Discipline team
- Instructing and supporting internal and external counsel on discipline matters
- Managing conduct reviews and ensuring timely completion
- Advising and making recommendations on disciplinary matters to leadership and committees
- Providing advice and assistance during investigations
- Collaborating with the Policy Department and other groups on discipline-related practices
- Managing special projects and serving as a liaison to working groups
- Participating in Federation of Canadian Law Societies' working groups as required
About You
To qualify, you will need practising membership in the Law Society of BC (or eligibility for membership) and a minimum of 10 years of recent litigation experience, including working knowledge of rules of evidence and administrative law. Previous supervisory or managerial experience and the ability to develop and manage budgets are also essential.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Experience within a regulatory body
- Mediation training or experience
- Familiarity with disciplinary processes and administrative law
