About the Opportunity
The Law Society is currently seeking a full-time Director of Professional Development to join our team in a hybrid work environment, in Vancouver, B.C.
In this role, you will report to the Sr. Director, Credentials, Professional Development and Practice Support, and will be accountable for overseeing the development and maintenance of well-educated and qualified legal professionals who serve the public in British Columbia.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering daily operations, design, and evaluation of the bar admission training course
- Administering skills assessments and exams, including implementing consistent grading criteria and passing standards
- Managing the administrative aspects of the bar admission training course, including lesson planning, scheduling, and classroom logistics
- Developing and managing policies related to the bar admission course, including handling accommodations, appeals, academic integrity, and confidentiality
- Contributing to the effectiveness of pre-call admission requirements and experiential licensing processes through program development and policy changes
- Identifying opportunities to provide relevant education that enhances ongoing competence of legal professionals
- Hiring, managing, and supervising departmental staff, providing performance feedback, and conducting annual reviews
- Recruiting and training contract instructors to support the bar admission training program
- Developing and managing the department’s annual budget
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with legal profession stakeholders, including licensing candidates, licensees, law firms, law schools, and academics
About You
To qualify, you will need a minimum of 10 years of combined experience in teaching, law practice, and management. Experience and knowledge of writing and publishing, online education, learning management, curriculum development, instructional design, educational technology, and competency-based assessment will also be essential.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Experience in change management, and proven ability to lead and manage transitions within programs, policies, or educational frameworks
- Ability to meet changing deadlines and priorities
- Strong critical thinking, analysis, and strategic planning abilities
- Expertise in advocacy, negotiation, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Technological proficiency and research capability
