About the Opportunity

Currently, the Law Society is seeking a candidate to become a Director of Credentials & Licensing to join our team. This is a hybrid work position, however, the successful candidate must reside in the Lower Mainland.

The Director of Credentials & Licensing is responsible for ensuring that Law Society regulatory standards relating to admissions, reinstatement, return to practice, inter-jurisdictional practice, practitioners of foreign law, continuing professional development, Family Law Mediators, Arbitrators and Parenting Coordinators, unclaimed trust funds, multi-disciplinary practices, and law firm regulation are met.

Your main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising the assignment of work to Credentials Officers and Credentials administrative staff, ensuring quality and quantity standards are met
  • Advising licensees and applicants on requirements of the Legal Profession Act and Law Society Rules, pertaining to Parts 2, 3 and 9
  • Advising on all exceptional or anomalous applications for admission
  • Providing support and advice to the Credentials Committee
  • Monitoring compliance of restrictions and conditions imposed by the Credentials Committee and Credentials Hearing Panels
  • Executing policy decisions and Rule changes relating to credentials, admissions, and entitlement to practice
  • Ensuring information on the website relating to credentials and licensing information is accurate
  • Overseeing the mandatory Continuing Professional Development program, including compliance monitoring
  • Overseeing accreditation of family law mediators, arbitrators, and parenting coordinators
  • Managing processes related to unclaimed trust fund
  • Developing and executing departmental policies and procedures
  • Hiring and training Credentials staff and providing ongoing performance feedback and conducting annual performance reviews
  • Developing and managing the annual budget for the department.

About You

To qualify, you will hold a law degree or have completed related legal training, and 5+ years of direct operational experience with a focus on administrative law matters. 

Skills, experience, and background in the following are required:

  • Management experience, including managing employee performance and managing a budget, preferably in a legal, regulatory, membership or admissions environment
  • Demonstrated leadership and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent time management, analytical, writing, interpersonal and
    communication
